Fun Weekend Trip

This past weekend, we took our kids to Wendover, Utah/Nevada

If you know anything about this town, you will wonder what we were thinking, as it exists mainly as a gambling town.  However, several friends (ok, one friend) have told us that is fun quick get away even if you don't gamble.  Knowing that it might be a total bust, we made a reservation at one of their hotel/casinos and drove the 2 1/2 hours there.
We stopped at the Bonneville Salt Flats on the way.  Way cool.
Here we are under "Wendover Will" in West Wendover.  Dentist husband's grandpa designed this sign.  (Since I only got the feet, imagine a huge waving cowboy).  He worked for Young Electric Sign company and "invented" the waving cowboy.  Most of the things in old Las Vegas were designed or at least worked by this Grandpa.
Inside one of the airplanes used in the movie Con Air
The Enola Gay hanger.  It is currently under renovation.  The Enola Gay is the airplane that left for Hiroshima with the first atomic bomb on it.  The Wendover airfield was a training airfield in WWII and where the atomic bombs were put together and then flown over to Japan.  At one point, it was the biggest airforce training facility.
Behind us is the Utah/Nevada state line.  The casinos literally start at this line.  Kind of hilarious and silly.
The trip ended up being really fun.  The hotel we stayed at had a wonderful pool and four hot tubs and we also found a yummy Mom and Pop Mexican restaurant--Trinos. We also saw "Night at the Museum II"  at the local theatre, which also doubles their only DVD rental store.   And, because the casinos do such great business, our hotel hardly cost us a thing.  This trip was a major bargain.

Oh and for you "I can't believe you took your kids to a gambling town" people, we did have a serious discussion about how gambling is bad, etc.

You are amazing, way to make a fun trip. I would never have thought of Wendover and you found cool stuff to do too. I call those teaching moments Junie B. Jones moments. You know how she says words we don't say or does things we don't do, then we talk about why. So I totally go for your gambling lesson.

Well, I'm glad you had the gambling lesson. I mean, otherwise you might have had kid trying to pull a chair up to the craps table and then where would you have been?!

I didn't know that the enola gay had ever been so close. Very cool stuff! Plus, anywhere with a pool is always a great kid get away :D
